A Pirate’s Will

By Ruth Anne Sline

A Pirate’s Will

Ye who wonders round my halls,

I to warn thee of my curse.

If ye found my treasure chest,

Shall find naught but riches.

From near and far within the seven seas,

others try to take these treasures from ye,

Be silent if ye wish to stay,

But be warned of these thief’s hands.

If they touch y treasure,

Their hands shall bleed

‘til they see their bones.

For ye who first find thy treasure.

Shall not be harmed in any way.

But don’t spend naught for one years time,

For these halls belong to thee

Who find thy treasure with a crew in two years time?

You shall stay on board.

All shall be provided on a notice,

Be not alarmed of thy wonders on this vessel,

So enjoy thy great legacy for the years

To come. When these halls and decks

Will have the crew, ye will choose

To speak of mere acts of every experience.

Chapter One

One day, while Rose was on her father’s boat, the engine stalled out. Rose looked around the water that they were in and saw an old pirate ship. Rose asked her father, “Dad can we go and see the ship over there?” Her father said, “Sure, just give me a minute and I will take you over there.” “Thanks dad.”

Twenty minutes later, Rose and her father saw the ships name The Red Rose. Wow, Rose thought, what a cool name. When they got on the top deck, an old piece of parchment flew at Rose’s hands.

“A pirate’s will,” Rose read aloud very slowly. Rose’s dad looked at the parchment and saw the seal of a black Rose. It was the same as the necklace Rose wore round her neck. The will was from Captain Morgan Rouge.

“Dad, are you ok? Dad can you hear me?” Rose said, then walked over to the main sail. She started to look round for doors and found one under the stairs to the steering wheel. When she opened the door, she saw a dress laying on the bed.

The dress placed itself on Rose and she seemed to fit it. Rose’s dad came running to Rose and saw the dress on her. She started to dance around and sing, but then Rose’s dad vanished and was gone.

Just as Rose stopped moving, a ghost came to greet her and said, “Welcome back, Rose. I’m am your grandfather. My name is Captain Morgan Rouge, I am part of your family. I want you to learn the way of the sea and now you will. I will teach you how to sword fight, climb the masts, and everything else. I will let you sleep for the night, just don’t be scared if you feel watched. Have a good night and enjoy your supper.” Captain Morgan Rouge left Rose be herself then.

Rose saw the table being set with food and she sat down. The plate in front of her was filled and placed in front of her. She ate what was on her plate and went to look out at the sea. She loved the smell of the salt water, but then she saw a shooting star.

She made a wish and wished to be able to see who was doing all the things on the ship. She felt tired and went into her room. Her bed was turned down and someone came to undress her. She was dressed in a silk night gown and tucked in her bed. She fell asleep immediately, with the smell of the water and the swaying of the ship.

The next morning, when Rose woke up, the table was set and a young woman came and dressed her in a gown of green silk and rubies sown in it. It felt a little heavy, but she noticed that her shoes were heavy, her hair was strait down with braids in it. She could barely move, then she walked slowly to the table and sat down as her plate got filled up with eggs, bacon, ham, toast, and cheese.

After she ate all on her plate, she sipped her goblet and found it was orange juice. When she stepped on to the top deck, she had to shield her eyes from the bright sun. She saw people doing all the types of things, then her grandfather walked up to her.

“Good morning, I hope you had a good nights rest Rose. Nice dress, it fits you just right, too.” Captain Rouge said, as he took her hand and showed her the top deck. “Thank you Grandfather, but where is my father?” Rose asked.

“He couldn’t stay my Dear, he wanted to tell you, ‘I will always love you and you will be in my heart.’ “ said Captain Rouge. He took out a necklace and placed it on Rose’s neck and said, “This was my mother’s necklace and you look like her. She was no older than you when she started to sail the seas. Her name was Rose Anita Rouge.”

“Okay, but how come I am here? I never knew my family heritage until now. Was my father trying to hide it from me?” Rose asked lightly. She looked at the necklace and saw it was a black rose. It looked just like the one her father had hidden from site all the time.

“You are the next Captain of this ship. Your father didn’t want you to know heritage because of the reason I would take you away. He knew your destiny was to sail the seas. It seems he knew the true future for you, but then again it was him protecting you from this path.” Captain Rouge said, then took her down to his room where the maps and compass was.

Rose sat at the desk, then her grandfather placed a map in front of her and said, “Now you must plan the next stop on The Red Rose’s journey. We are now here and there are two ports nearby.” He pointed at the Caribbean area, and at Tortugas and Barbados.

Rose didn’t think about the choice and picked Tortugas. He handed her the compass and she drew the on the map as she was instructed to. She didn’t realize the time when there was food being laid out on the table in her grandfathers room. She went and sat down and watched as her plate was filled up.

After Rose finished her plate, her grandfather had her take the seat at his desk again and doing the maps. She was having a blast, but then she yawned and stretched. She loved the maps and was looking at the different courses that the ship could take.

Captain Morgan Rouge was surprised that Rose was having fun, that he didn’t notice that the time for dinner for her had arrived. “Rose you need to stop for the night. Its time to eat.” Rose’s Grandfather said. “Oh, okay.” Rose said and got up to sit at the table for her supper. She ate all the food in front of her and was taken to her room by her grandfather.

“Thank you for the day Grandfather, it was really fun today. Goodnight.” Rose said, as she hugged him and went inside her room. She was happy, as she was dressed for bed and fell asleep. She had dreams of smelling sea water and fighting with a sword.

When she woke up the next morning, she was dressed in pants, boots, a shirt, corset, and her hair was put up in a bun. She ate her breakfast and met her grandfather on the top deck. She was glad her hair was up right now, the temperature was hot.

She was taken to a room near her grandfather’s office and saw a post of sorts. “Now I will show you how to sword fight. You are going to be using a triangle. Top, side, top, side, and so on. Its an easy pattern to follow and remember.” Captain Rouge said, and he showed her as he said the pattern.

She started to follow the pattern and started to get fast. She liked to sword fight, then she remembered how she fought in her dream and started to do that. She was a natural for it, then it was lunch time.

Her grandfather noticed how she was fighting and watched. She was fighting like his mother had, then was getting faster. “Dear its time for lunch, we can try that after you eat. Okay, Rose?” He said. “Cool, and I will be better soon.” Rose said, as she went to the table in his room for lunch.

As Rose finished her plate, her grandfather was baffled at how she knew how to fight like that already. “What did you dream last night Dear?” He asked quietly. “I was fighting and running the ship. Not that I say is unusual for me, I practiced when I was only three and dad only laughed.” She said, as she ate her last bite on her plate. “You are like my mother, that’s how she began to know the art of sword fighting.” He said and sighed.

She was going to be hard to beat in two weeks of practice. She has the spirit of Rose Anita Rouge, well at least she was a good fighter. After a second of thinking, Rose got up and started to stretch out to the sky.

“Do you want to take a nap, Rose?” He said, as she yawned. Rose said, “I don’t want to, but I am tired. I had some great sleep last night. No, I don’t want to. I‘m only bored for a bit. ” Rose smiled.

“I will let you take a nap, thou you may not want to. You will do more fighting when you wake up and eat. You can see how the ship is run at night too. It will be good for you.” Captain Rouge said and walked Rose to her room. He opened Rose’s door and let her in. “Get a good nap and we will have some fun tonight.” He said and closed her door.
